A huge R1 billion rebuild has produced a stunningly modern and upmarket 5 Star Deluxe resort with a range of facilities unmatched on the island! The new Trou aux Biches is set to garner a whole new legion of followers whilst delighting fans of the old resort who will no doubt be bowled over by the superb transformation of their old favourite!
Many of the island’s original resorts have been subject to renovations over the years – often though this is very much a “lick of paint and new curtains†type facelift. The transformation of the Trou aux Biches was something very different however, with the old hotel being razed to the ground and an entirely new and state of the art resort being constructed literally from scratch. Lovers of small boutique style properties should probably look away now, as at 333 suites and villas the new Trou aux Biches is the largest resort on the island! It’s also one of the resorts with the most extensive facilities – how does 6 restaurants, a couple of bars, a state of the art gym, 6 tennis courts, a Spa with no less than 20 treatment rooms, free watersports list as long as your arm, not to mention the more than 100 swimming pools found throughout the resort grab you! Mind you with a 2 kilometre stretch of beach on offer on this section of the north-west coast there’s plenty of space for everyone – so honeymooners looking for a bit of privacy and tranquility will still be able to find a quiet spot. Of course, the resort’s position on the north-west coast is also well-known for enjoying good weather year round and a further bonus for many guests is that it’s also in close proximity to the tourist hub of Grand Baie should they want to do some shopping in the boutiques there.
The resort’s 333 suites and villas are spread throughout the extensive grounds with the Junior Suites built in crescents designed to ensure that one suite does not overlook another. Whatever room type you go for you’ll enjoy considerable spaciousness and bang-up-to-date contemporary styling - even the 90 Junior Suites are a roomy 63 m²! Whilst these rooms are lovely, our choice for honeymooners would definitely either be a Beachfront Suite with Pool (102 m²) or the larger Beachfront Senior Suite with Pool (163 m²) - these both enjoy prime positions within yards of the sand with spectacular views over the beach and lagoon beyond. And the private plunge pools mean that you hardly have to leave the comfort and privacy of your room other than for meals should you so choose! Families are also well catered for at Trou aux Biches however. Whilst the Junior Suites unusually only take an infant sharing with parents, there are 46 Tropical Junior Suites (70 m²) which accept a child; but if you’re looking for more room and privacy at a reasonable price then the 40 Family Suites (104 m²) with their 2 en-suite bedrooms taking up to 3 kids sharing with their parents would probably do the trick. If budget isn’t an issue then you could always spoil yourself by choosing 1 of the gorgeous new Villas with pools which come complete with villa master service for part of each day – set individually in the lush grounds of the resort separate from the main resort buildings, each Villa enjoys their own private walled garden with private swimming pool, outdoor shower and barbecue area, whilst inside there is a spacious lounge area and a fully equipped kitchen which can be used either for you to prepare your own meal or for a chef to prepare a meal for you (at extra cost) There are 10 of these Pool Villas at Trou aux Biches with 2 bedrooms (246 m²) as well as 17 which have 3 bedrooms (290 m²) – these really are the perfect choice for a holiday with the whole family or group of friends if you can afford them!
With 6 restaurants at Trou aux Biches there are too many choices to go into here in any sort of detail – suffice to say that there is more than enough variety to keep guests happy even if they spend a couple of weeks staying at the resort! Whilst many guests will be happy to spend much of their time at the main restaurant called L’Oasis overlooking the main pool with its sumptuous buffets and live cooking stations, the beauty of Trou aux Biches is that you can also choose to dine from set menus at the other more intimate speciality restaurants at no extra cost (or you can choose from the a la carte menu at these restaurants at a supplement) For a dine-whilst-gazing-over-the-ocean experience, head to the beachfront Le Deck specializing in fresh seafood; then there's La Caravelle where a selection of fine international cuisine is on offer and finally a nice range of ethnic choices, ranging from Thai (the Blue Ginger) through Indian (Mahiya) to Italian (Il Corallo) – the nett result is that you really are spoilt for choice on every day of your holiday!
The same vast choice also applies to the many activities on offer at Trou aux Biches. A major highlight here at Trou aux Biches has to be the stunning beach of course, which is the perfect playground for kids of all ages. The gorgeous turquoise waters of the lagoon are home to a wealth of different watersports, including complimentary waterskiing, wind surfing, sailing, snorkelling, glass bottom boat, kayaking and pedal boats; then at an extra cost you can enjoy such fun activities as deep sea fishing, scuba diving or a luxury catamaran cruise. Back on land there’s beach volleyball and 6 floodlit tennis courts, but the real star of the show has to be an excellent sports centre offering great gym equipment as well as spinning and aerobics and 2 hammams. That leads us neatly into the superb new Spa which comprises a string of individual thatched pavilions tucked away amidst palm trees and exotic plants – the beauty of the set-up here is that some cabins will suit guests looking for the cool comfort of air-conditioned interiors while others provide a get-closer-to-nature experience under the shade of thatched roofs. And you can enjoy your pampering massage content in the knowledge that your kids are being taken care of by the excellent staff of the kid’s club. This really is a resort which will appeal to couples and families alike!
The rebirth of Trou aux Biches was one of the most eagerly awaited resort openings in Mauritius for many years. And it certainly was worth the wait. The legend is back…only better than ever before!
