What's Hot

  • We love the whole "barefoot" concept where guests go shoeless on the sandy floors, as well as the informal dress code at meals - we wish that this was available at more Mauritian resorts!
  • This translates into a very vibey and relaxed feel to the whole resort - it's really suited to young and young-at-heart couples and families
  • Innovative Family Rooms and the Timomo Kid's Club, together with the relaxed atmosphere, mean that kids will love it here
  • Couples looking for a bit more peace and quiet away from the kids have the option of booking into the "adults only" wing of the resort - including it own child-free pool and restaurant

What's Not

  • The beach here has been "created", so isn't of the same quality as you can find elsewhere on the island
  • It's a buzzy, quite vibrant resort - so people looking for peace and tranquility should probably look elsewhere
  • Tiny bathrooms - not an issue for some people, a deal-breaker for others
  • Standard Rooms are quite set back from the beach

Located on one of the most beautiful stretches of the island on the north-west coast between Pointe aux Piments and Trou Aux Biches, the Veranda Pointe aux Biches has a simple and rustic style with the emphasis firmly on casual relaxation and outdoor living. You’re still only a couple of minutes away though from the bright lights and boutiques of the bustling village of Grand Baie where visitors can enjoy shopping, sightseeing and a busy nightlife if they so desire. But our guess is that guests at this resort will prefer to mainly chill out in the extremely relaxing atmosphere that prevails here. This is the place to enjoy the simple pleasures of a traditional beach holiday - sleeping, catching up on your reading with a undemanding paperback bestseller, playing with your little ones on the beach or simply just lying back on the golden sands of the beach whilst you work on that all-important holiday tan.

There are 115 rooms at the Veranda Pointe aux Biches, all furnished in a cozy cottage-by-the-sea style with warm browns, refreshing blues and luxurious creams creating a peaceful blend of rustic charm and simple elegance. A prominent feature is the use of natural woods and fabrics and the overall effect is very restful whilst being very contemporary in style. You can choose from three types of accommodation which all offer garden, sea or pool views as well as air-con, TV’s, minibars and bathrooms with showers – first up are the 41 Standard Rooms (33 m²) which can accommodate 2 adults and an infant, but if you’ve got kids then the resort offers 44 excellent Family Rooms (43 m²) where there is a clever little annexed kid’s room with twin bunk beds, giving you the benefit of both extra space and privacy; if you’re a couple looking for a more adult environment, then there are 30 Privilege Rooms (33 m²) which have been built in a separate new wing called the “Sandy Lane Village” which is also home to an adults-only pool as well as the lovely Sandy Lane restaurant.

Whilst the sandy floors that dominate the resort are in many ways its unique signature, the irony is that the beach at the Veranda Pointe aux Biches is probably not its strongest point. Tons of beach sand have been brought in and the rocks piled into large screening barriers to create a 100 metres long sandy cove where the water is like a swimming pool – it might not be the most aesthetically pleasing beach in Mauritius, but is a pretty effective one. One thing to note here is that due to the presence of rocks and corals in the lagoon, no motorised watersports are available at the Veranda Pointe aux Biches, although you can potter about to your heart’s content in the resort’s kayaks and pedal boats. Free land sports include beach volleyball, darts, tennis, table tennis and access to the fitness room.

The innovative Family Rooms aren’t the only kid-friendly aspect to the resort, with the Timomo kid’s club on hand with a load of fun supervised activities organised throughout the day that are guaranteed to put a smile on the youngsters’ faces. But don’t neglect your own needs whilst the kids have fun – in fact we’re pretty sure that a blissful massage in one of the two massage kiosks situated directly above the beach will end up putting a deliciously contented look of relaxation on your face too! (and if you fancy a bit more privacy, there are also 2 more massage rooms inside the resort’s Seven Colours Spa proper)

We’ve never truly understood why on a tropical island like Mauritius (and the Seychelles is the same by the way) that resorts always insist on “smart casual” dress for dinner, with gents expected to wear long pants despite the tropical heat and humidity. Hopefully the Veranda Pointe aux Biches will be the start of something new with their relaxed dress code policy. This obviously works fantastically with the sand floors that feature in the resort’s restaurants and bars – after all there really is nothing better than enjoying an ice cold beer or a romantic dinner with your toes in the sand! You can choose from 2 restaurants here - Senses, the main restaurant overlooking the sea, offers theme buffets whilst for a more romantic experience the Sandy Lane Grill invites you to a barefoot a la carte dining experience with a grill station and some delicious seafood specialties. Then there are the superbly social bars where you can take your pick from 2 drinking holes – the Lazy Pool Bar where you can enjoy a light lunch around the sparkling pool, or the Foot Loose Bar where you’ll enjoy expertly mixed tropical cocktails as you laze on the sun-drenched deck looking out onto the lagoon. Mmmm – this Mauritian holiday thing really is a tough business but someone has to do it…
