Our Verdict

Tucked away on the island’s west coast at Tamarin Bay, The Sands resort is a little gem that has to be one of the island's best kept secrets! At just 92 rooms and with no kid’s club it attracts relatively few children, which makes it particularly suited to couples looking for peace and tranquility in a more intimate and personal resort.

What's Hot

  • Great for couples and honeymooners looking for a quieter and more tranquil resort not overrun by kids - with just 92 spacious rooms it lends itself perfectly to couples wanting a quiet time with more personal service and an intimate atmosphere
  • Free foot massages and fruit skewers on the beach are a great touch!
  • A romantic dinner under the stars at the PinkPepperCorn restaurant is a must!
  • Steam and Sauna rooms are free to access by all guests

What's Not

  • Families should look elsewhere for a resort to keep the whole gang happy as there's no kid's club here
  • The view out over the sea is perhaps not as pretty as at other resorts due to the large piled up stone wave barriers offshore
  • With just 92 rooms it's understandable that you aren't going to find the sheer variety of choices in restaurants and other facilities that you would at larger resorts

The Sands is located at the southern end of Flic en Flac, a popular resort area with a variety of other four and five star hotels. It benefits from being the last resort to be found along the road (although this does mean it is a good walk into the village itself) as the position means it is probably the quietest and most tranquil of the lot. Take a walk along the beach past the other resorts and you may also come to the conclusion that The Sands is one of the most attractive of the resorts and the least crowded as it is certainly the smallest along this stretch of beach. The first thing that strikes you as you enter The Sands is the stunning layout and views. The reception area is open plan and leads down to the Dolphin Bar, Tamarind Terrace restaurant and the hotel’s focal point, the lovely infinity swimming pool which overlooks Tamarin Bay - this all leads onto a pretty and secluded beach (and perhaps you’ll be lucky enough to spot some of the wild dolphins that the bay is famous for!)

The resort is relatively small by Mauritian standards with just 91 Deluxe Rooms and 1 Ocean Suite, and the layout is such that it never feels crowded – you’re always likely to be able to find space around the pool, on the beach loungers or at the restaurants. Apart from the Ocean Suite, all of the rooms are identical, being located in one of two crescent shape wings either side of the restaurant/pool area of the hotel and enjoying sea views from their balconies or terraces. Whilst the Deluxe Rooms are never going to win awards for style or luxury, they are clean and comfortable and, perhaps most importantly, very spacious at 52 m². They consist of a large bedroom (with large widescreen TV, a mini bar, air con and doors opening onto a balcony or terrace) as well as a large walk in bathroom/dressing room with shower, separate bath and dual sinks. All in all a very agreeable space in which to spend a week’s holiday.

The Sands offers a wide array of amenities to ensure you have a great time. First and foremost there is the lovely sandy beach – unusually you’ll find that rocks and coral have been piled up offshore to form wave barriers whilst cleaning up the sea bed (although you’re still likely to come across pieces of coral in the water so it is wise to wear reef shoes when venturing in) Then there’s the resort’s enticing infinity swimming pool perfect for those guests who prefer to swim in fresh water rather than in the ocean. They also have kayaks, pedal boats, glass bottom boats, waterskiing, windsurfing, and snorkeling. Back on land you may enjoy a game of beach volleyball or tennis or head to the game room where you can play your favorite games to your heart’s content. For something more tranquil yoga and Tai Chi is on offer, or otherwise head to the resort’s Sandsation Spa - apart from the usual luxurious body and beauty treatments (including hot stone treatments, shiatsu, reiki and reflexology amongst others) they also offer something very unusual: the chance for you to create your very own personalized perfume working together with an expert fragrance consultant!

You’ll no doubt spend a lot of time during your stay on the pool deck overlooking Tamarin Bay where the Dolphin Bar staff will mix you up a delicious exotic cocktail whilst you chat to fellow guests and admire the stunning view. After sundowners you can head for your choice of the 3 restaurants on offer at The Sands: the main restaurant is the Tamarind Terrace which specializes in theme buffets with a different theme each evening - Italian, Asian, Chinese etc. Whilst the food here attracts consistently good feedback, you may choose to head for one of the more intimate restaurants - if your tastes lean more towards the east, Spices will cook up some delicately flavoured dishes inspired by India in a lovely environment of dark wood, stone and wonderfully atmospheric lighting. For a real romantic treat though, our choice would probably be the PinkPepperCorn, a lovely beach restaurant where you can dine on a stunning wooden deck under the stars! There's even live entertainment provided every night around the bar by local musicians and dancers – but don’t worry about being disturbed by loud music way into the early hours; it’s much gentler fare and by midnight the only sound you'll hear are the gentle waves lapping onto the sandy beach!
