The Residence is located overlooking a sheltered lagoon on Mauritius' east coast at Belle Mare, and its kilometre of beach ranks as one of the finest on the island. Architecturally, this is one of the most impressive hotels on the island with its sugar plantation inspired design giving it a feeling of authenticity and sheer “rightness” in the way it fits into its surroundings – it really is the epitome of Mauritian style. There are 135 oversized rooms and 28 suites situated in modern three-story buildings above the beach. All the rooms are luxurious, stylish and very comfortable. All are furnished in cool, calming tones of white, cream and beige with the interiors evoking the simplicity and mood of the 1920's era, with beige silk and white linen beds, classic wooden shuttered windows, over sized marble en-suite bathrooms with separate bathtub and shower and walk-in dressing rooms – at the same time they also enjoy all the modern conveniences you would expect, such as satellite TV’s, DVD and CD player and air-conditioning. To cement that impression of the elegance and sophistication of yesteryear, every room and suite is also assigned a personal butler to take care of those mundane jobs such as unpacking your luggage, running a bath and taking care of your laundry and ironing. The final touch to perfect the refined atmosphere in the rooms during the evening is the few drops of Ylang Ylang that are delicately placed on ceramic rings warmed by the bedside lamps.

The 135 luxuriously appointed rooms are divided into three categories with the 28 suites split into four categories. There are 41 Colonial Garden View rooms, each 54m2 in size, 56 Colonial Ocean View rooms which are 56m2 and 38 Colonial Ocean Front rooms which are 58m2. . The Suites are a step up in luxury and opulence with lots of space in the bedrooms, large living room areas and some of the most wonderful views in the resort. There are 8 Colonial Garden View Junior Suites which are 86m2, 10 Colonial Garden View Senior Suites of 106m2, 2 Colonial Ocean View Suites of 164m2 and 8 Colonial Ocean Front Suites of 116m² - as you would expect the larger the room and the closer it is to the sea, the higher the price.

The Residence prides itself on its cuisine and there are three superb restaurants to choose from with a choice of Creole, French and international cuisine. The Dining Room restaurant, made entirely of wood and delicately positioned overlooking the pool, serves up delicious a la carte menus at night where you can enjoy the spices of the local Creole cuisine or sophisticated international cuisine. For lunchtime head to The Verandah where you can enjoy light snacks around the pool. Also located close to the swimming pool is the Gourmet Kiosque, where kids (of all ages!) will no doubt delight in the delicious sweet snacks such as waffles, pancakes and an assortment of ice creams on offer. Finally for a really romantic option there’s The Plantation, a planter's house by the beach, which offers a wide range of seafood and a selection of dishes cooked with local herbs and spices. The food here is particularly good and it is popular with both locals as well as hotel residents. In addition to the restaurants there is a spacious bar, decorated with wide sofas, comfortable armchairs and discreet lighting, where the walls are hung with a fine collection of engravings of scenes from Mauritius's history. This is a great place to enjoy a late breakfast, cup of tea or cocktail in the evening whilst relaxing to the live music that is provided until midnight.

One of The Residence’s major draw cards has to be its stunning natural beach boasting the softest powder white sand and clear turquoise water – it’s kept immaculately clean too and you’ll love the attentive staff bringing you fruit and chilled bottles of water as you top up your tan on your lounger. The presence of a fringing coral reef about 400 metres offshore absorbing any waves from the open ocean means that the lagoon is like a big swimming pool, making it perfect both for a cooling dip as well as the various watersports offered by the resort – these include free waterskiing, windsurfing, dinghy sailing, kayaking, snorkelling, paddle boats and glass bottom boat trips. Watersports that can be arranged for an extra charge include deep sea fishing, catamaran cruises and scuba diving. For those that enjoy land sports, facilities include three floodlit tennis courts, aerobics lessons, volley ball and use of the fitness equipment, steam room and sauna. If you just fancy chilling then the large swimming pool complete with a Jacuzzi is the perfect place – there’s also a smaller children’s pool available for the kids. In fact The Residence is a great choice for a family holiday – they have access to The Planters Kids Club, a 400 m2 space inspired by a sugar-cane plantation house where trained staff arrange loads of fun activities such as treasure hunts, snorkelling lessons, body painting, glass-bottom boat tours and pony rides – there’s even evening entertainment laid on, such as fashion shows, plays and films. Whilst the kids are kept occupied, you can perhaps escape to The Sanctuary, the resort’s beautiful Spa – for a special treat, enjoy a massage in the cabin set overlooking the lagoon, where you can relax whilst being pampered in the soft, warm sea breeze!

The Residence prides itself on exclusivity, luxury and pampering - and it certainly succeeds and then some! Not a detail is overlooked and the service is impeccable. The Residence manages that difficult balancing act of being both elegant and sophisticated, yet at the same time friendly and welcoming. A top pick for a superb holiday in Mauritius!
