What's Hot

  • The very romantic villas with their 4 poster beds boast a very attractive and elegant beach house style chic
  • Perfect for those looking for a peaceful and relaxing ambiance as opposed to the busier vibe of more typical resorts
  • For special occasions in particular, the quality of service and attention to detail will blow you away!
  • Even if peace and quiet is the primary goal for guests, you still have many activities available to you should you decide to venture beyond the comfort of your villa

What's Not

  • The beach has been groomed into a beautiful slope into the water, but if you want to venture into the water be aware of the craggy nature of the sea floor
  • Two restaurants on site, so if you are one who likes more of a variety of venue instead look to some of the bigger resorts
  • Exclusivity and luxury unfortunately doesn't come cheap - not for those who have to check whether their credit card is getting maxed out every month

This resort, which is part of one of the world’s most prestigious hotel groups, is located on the north-west coast of the island overlooking the marine reserve of Turtle Bay, which means it also enjoys the excellent climate synonymous with this area of the island. With just 72 rooms the Oberoi will appeal to discerning clients looking for a smaller, more personal and very upmarket resort in an environment of quiet tranquility where they can totally escape the pressures of modern life.

When it comes to top end resorts in Mauritius, you’re often faced with the choice of going with one of the older resorts that often boast the best beaches on the island (when they were being built the island was relatively undeveloped and they had first pick of locations) but which are larger in size and often less luxurious than the later resort arrivals, which in turn arguably have the edge in terms of accommodation and style but don’t enjoy the same top quality beaches. The Oberoi falls into this latter bracket, and whether it will appeal to you as a resort to seriously consider for your holiday shortlist will largely come down to how important a stunning beach is to you. “Of course a great beach is important!” I hear you say, but in fact this is nowhere near the no-brainer it first appears. In our experience, many people go on a beach holiday only to spend their entire week just gazing out over the sea from the comfort of their pool deck lounger without ever even coming close to actually swimming in the sea! To enhance the somewhat rocky original, the Oberoi has brought in tons of white sand to create some lovely beach platforms for tanning on and this will be perfect for many people – enter the water though and (as is the case with many beaches on the island to be honest) some reef shoes will be a good idea.

We have no such qualms about recommending the accommodation at the Oberoi, with the rooms all being airy, very cool and fresh in a lovely beach house chic style with open wooden slatted ceilings and neutral tones pre-dominating. Accommodation is either in luxury pavilions or luxury villas, most with their own private pool. They have refined yet understated interiors with spacious bedrooms featuring king-sized four-poster beds, TV, DVD player and air-conditioning - the en-suite bathrooms have cool marble floors and sunken marble baths with a separate shower and open onto a private garden. Then there are shady terraces overlooking the ocean and tropical gardens - a wonderful place to enjoy a private dinner! There are 72 rooms at the Oberoi, divided into four different categories: firstly 48 Luxury Pavilions (70 m²) with a spacious bedroom and sitting area; then there 6 Luxury Villas with Private Garden (200 m²) where in addition to a spacious bedroom and living room there is an open air-dining pavilion where one can enjoy al-fresco dining. The 16 Luxury Villas with Private Pool (also 200 m²) offer all the features of the luxury villas but have the added bonus of their own private swimming pool set within walled courtyard gardens giving you privacy and a beautiful place to relax. Finally, the two Royal Villas (600 m²) are the ultimate in spacious luxury boasting uninterrupted ocean views, lush tropical gardens and a large private pool.

As you would expect from the limited number of rooms in the resort, dining choices are not as extensive as at the big resorts but they are of very high quality. The main restaurant is a very impressive structure, with a soaring roof of palm-thatched timbers and panoramic views across the Indian Ocean. You can dine inside, or even better, outside. In the morning enjoy coffee under blue sky and puffy clouds and in the evening enjoy your dinner under the stars. The cuisine is excellent and features European, Oriental and Creole dishes with lots of fresh local fruit, vegetables and spices being used. The second restaurant, the Lagoon Pool Restaurant, enjoys breathtaking ocean views and offers light salads, pasta, pizzas and sandwiches - ideal for a light lunch in-between activities or relaxation; in the evening, you can enjoy fusion cuisine in a very relaxed atmosphere next to the sea. The a la carte menu and drinks prices are as you would expect of a Mauritius resort at the very top end of the market – that is, heart stopping unless you have budgeted accordingly!

Our guess is that many guests at the Oberoi will spend much of their time simply relaxing around their villa or on a lounger around one of the resort’s two beautiful pools lapping up the resort’s air of peace and tranquillity (for a little more privacy, it is worth finding the adults-only Turtle Bay pool overlooking Turtle Bay which is tucked away and can easily be missed) Whilst children are welcome and there is a kid’s club, we always feel that quieter and more intimate upmarket resorts like the Oberoi are perhaps not the best choice for family holidays – rather choose somewhere bigger and with more going on if you want to keep everyone happy. But whilst quiet relaxation might be the norm, it’s worth noting that the resort does offer a comprehensive range of water and land sports - you can enjoy free water-skiing, windsurfing, snorkelling, hobie-cat sailing, laser sailing, sea kayaking and paddle boats whilst scuba diving and deep sea fishing can be arranged at extra cost; back on land facilities include a state of the art gym, steam and sauna room and two floodlit tennis courts. After that you’ll probably head to the lovely Spa for some relaxing pampering - perhaps one of the traditional Mauritian treatments using natural local oils and fruits! From the second you arrive at the entrance to this classy and tranquil resort you will feel the sense of harmony with the environment and relaxation that engulfs all who enter – embrace it and you will definitely leave a revitalised person!
