Our Verdict

Set on the sunset side of the longest white sand beach on the island, Sugar Beach is a charming luxury 5 Star resort built in the style of an old Mauritian sugar plantation and is an old favourite amongst South African travellers to the island. Wish you (or should that be I) were here...

What's Hot

  • Superb powder sand beach - the name of the resort says it all really!
  • Excellent range of facilities including a wide choice of restaurants and bars - you also have access to everything on offer at La Pirogue, the sister resort next door
  • Elegant and classy finishes in rooms
  • Not much can touch horse-riding along an island beach - and this is one of the few resorts on the island where this is offered
  • Imposing manor house gives the resort a unique look and feel

What's Not

  • Room décor is quite restrained and conservative and would perhaps not appeal to guests looking for more contemporary styling touches
  • At 40 m² the rooms are on the smallish side for a resort of this class
  • We're never fans of rooms housed in big blocks, so given the choice we would avoid the rooms in the Manor House and opt for those in the villas spread throughout the gardens
Sugar Beach

Sugar Beachcombines a fascinating blend of colonial architecture, great romantic ambience, gracious lifestyle, incomparable recreational facilities and superlative service to create a unique tropical island holiday experience

Sugar Beach is located on the west coast of Mauritius close to the village of Flic en Flac. It’s set amongst 12 hectares of lush tropical gardens that sweep down to one of the longest palm-fringed sand beaches on the island - but the dominating feature of the hotel that perhaps stands out most to guests has to be the majestic colonial-style Manor House with its imposing formal avenue of palm trees that leads down across the immaculate lawns to the beach. The 287 guest rooms and suites are divided between the Manor House as well as 16 plantation-style villas which are located in twin arcs north and south of the Manor House in the gardens. Each room is elegantly furnished and designed to highlight the resorts' contemporary plantation theme with light, classic colours complemented by elegant colonial mahogany furniture – it all adds up to a very classy and restrained ambiance that will appeal to clients looking for understated elegance.

All rooms have a private terrace, easy chair and day bed. Funnily enough both the Manor House Garden View and Garden View Villas are exactly the same size (40 m²) which is quite compact for this level of hotel, and the differences between them really come down to position and the bathroom facilities. The Manor House Garden View rooms are split between the Manor House (80 of them) with the rest on the upper floors of the villas (another 84) and they have the “shower in bath” arrangement that we must confess to not being hugely partial to. The Garden View Villas (92 of them) on the other hand are all located on the ground floor of the villas so giving better access to the gardens and beach and also boast separate showers and baths as well as larger vanities in the bathrooms – if you’re fussy about showering like we are then this will probably be your preferred choice of room type. Finally there are 2 Villa Beachfront Suites (80 m²) also located on the ground floor of the villas which are much more spacious on account of their separate and luxurious lounge area.

From the majestic Manor House an impressive formal avenue of palms leads you down to the superb white sand beach which must rank as one of the very finest on the island with its champagne clear water and wonderfully soft talcum-powder sand (that’s where the resort gets its name from after all!) This is the perfect place to have a splash with the kids, top up your tan or take a long stroll along the beach – and the good news is that a beach cart provides refreshments and light snacks along the beach which you can enjoy in the privacy of your own thatched umbrella. There’s also a huge sparkling main pool with relaxing bubble pool and a separate kid’s area where they can let their hair down - or if you fancy something a bit more restful and tranquil, then head to the smaller South Pool which is located in a quieter area and is ideal for couples. As you would expect from a top Sun Resorts property, Sugar Beach offers an impressive range of sports, both on land (even quite unusual things like martial arts, spinning classes, aerobics and yoga and Pilates as well as the usual floodlit tennis courts) and also on the water (unlimited waterskiing, windsurfing, kayaking and snorkelling for example) – one of the more unusual activities offered by Sugar Beach though is the chance to go horse-riding on the long, palm lined beach. If that all seems way too active for you, then head instead to the resort’s Aura Spa where you can bliss out whilst enjoying one of their wide range of pampering treatments and massages.

Apart from all of these activities, kids will also be kept occupied by the excellent kid’s club, or more accurately “clubs”. That’s right – there is a club for the littlies (2-11) called the Sun Kids Club with a range of exciting and imaginative daily fun programmes and even dinner time buffets and barbeques enjoyed under the supervision of specially trained hostess. Then for teens there is the Sun Generation club with exclusive hang-out areas allowing youngsters to interact, play the latest computer games and enjoy music in a safe and fun environment. They also get the chance to get out and about in the sun with activities like beach volleyball, teen beach BBQ’s, pizza nights and island picnics – and at night the Sports Bar, which includes video games, music TV, pool and its own DJ, converts into a cool night time teen disco! This could finally be one family holiday your usually sulky teenager actually thanks you for!

Sugar Beach is a large resort in its own right and accordingly offers a wide range of restaurants and bars – but a further advantage of staying here is that you can also walk next door to sister resort La Pirogue if you fancy a change of scenery to try out their restaurants and facilities too. A great place to enjoy a sundowner cocktail is Tides Bar next to the beach - as darkness descends the fire pit is lit giving it a wonderfully atmospheric ambience! Another great option for a drink is the Mon Plaisir Bar, styled as a typical French pavement cafe, where you can enjoy a selection of old rums, malt whiskies and single barrel bourbons, perhaps whilst puffing away contentedly on a Cuban cigar. The main restaurant is Mon Plaisir Restaurant where you can enjoy elegant table d'hôte dinners, but for something much more intimate head for Tides Restaurant on the beachfront where you can enjoy great fresh seafood including excellent sushi. Then there’s Citronella's Café specializing in sunny Mediterranean cuisine, but for something really special the romantic a la carte restaurant Paul & Virginie, specializing in authentic island cuisine where you dine outdoors in cosy little thatch-roofed dining pavilions, is tough to beat!
