What's Hot

  • Superb spa that offers various yoga and holistic activities as well as some of the best relaxation techniques in wellness pampering
  • Gorgeous and extremely spacious accommodation which will really appeal to couples and families looking for peace and quiet as there are just 61 suites and villas
  • We love the casual feet-in-the-sand ambience of the beach restaurant The Fish and Rhum Shack
  • Location is stunning with pristine blue hued water and white sandy beaches with wonderful sunset views

What's Not

  • Many guests tend to stick to their lovely rooms - so if you're looking for a more buzzy and sociable vibe perhaps head instead to a larger resort
  • Whilst there is a kid's club, the fact that there are just 61 suites and villas here means that they are unlikely to have the same amount of play partners here compared to larger resorts - so whilst the villas are great for accommodating families, the kids should ideally be happy to spend time with the family
Shanti Maurice

Shanti Mauricethe Shanti Maurice is now a more balanced all round resort offering a range of hedonistic delights appealing to the more mainstream holidaymaker to go along with the yoga classes and meditation sessions - the pleasure principle has now been embraced!

Beautifully located in 36 acres of tropical gardens on the stunning southern coast of the island where Mauritius is at its most rugged and picturesque, the Shanti Maurice which was recently included in the “Leading Hotels of the World” portfolio lies along one of the island’s best beaches with rugged mountains making for an impressive backdrop. An 800 metre crescent of pristine white sand bracketed by large black volcanic rocks and fringing the clear turquoise waters of the lagoon, the beach can be viewed from all 61 suites and villas which are among the most generously proportioned in Mauritius. These rooms are some of the most elegant and luxurious on the island too with interiors filled with natural elements including local hardwoods, granite, marble, and slate that make them simultaneously upmarket and sophisticated whilst retaining a natural feeling.

The 44 Junior Suites (which are some of the most spacious in Mauritius at 81 m²) are a good starting point – they’re the only non-standalone rooms in the resort being housed in units of 4 (with 2 suites upstairs and 2 down) The ground floor suites have direct access to the beach, as well as an outdoor rain shower, while the suites on the first floor have the advantage of large balconies overlooking the Indian Ocean giving them the advantage of better views – whichever you end up in you’ll find them equipped with luxury features like plasma TVs, DVD players and broadband Internet access. The Junior Suites are also found closest to the best stretch of sandy beach with most of the villas lining a wilder and rockier stretch of coastline. If you require more room then you have 4 different types of villas to choose from – all with large private heated swimming pools and surrounded by exotic private gardens, terraces and courtyards with salas. The “smallest” of these are the 8 Luxury Villas (although at 208 m² they can hardly be termed “small”!) and from there you then step up to the 5 Luxury Suite Villas (376 m²) which add a large separate living room to the mix. If you’re a family or group of friends then there are 3 Two Bedroom Villas which would be perfect for you – or if money truly is no object then the stunning Shanti Villa, positioned on the point and enjoying unrivalled views and which covers a massive 800 m², has to rank as one of the ultimate blissful retreats on the island!

There’s a decent range of dining options available to guests at the Shanti Maurice and the focus here is on the freshest local produce imaginatively presented with the focus firmly on ala carte selections with ordinary buffets conspicuous by their absence. Very unusually South African inspired “Cape” dishes reign supreme at the resort's flagship restaurant, Stars. For something a bit lighter and perhaps more island style, visit the all-day dining restaurant Pebbles for a Creole-spiced salad or something suitable from the wellness cuisine menu specifically tailored towards guests looking for healthier and lighter options. The Red Ginger Lounge Bar is the place to chat to fellow guests over an exotic cocktail whilst listening to local musicians, but our favourite has to be the rustic beach barbeque restaurant, the Fish and Rhum Shack, where you sit at driftwood tables with the feel of beach sand between your toes as you enjoy deliciously fresh seafood such as lobsters and prawns grilled over the coals accompanied by locally-distilled rum - this relaxed dining experience has rapidly become a firm favourite with guests at the Shanti Maurice!

Whilst being based in the far south of the island means that you’re away from the main commercial centres like Grand Baie or Port Louis if you fancied doing some shopping, there’s more than enough on offer at the resort to keep you otherwise happy and occupied – the team at the boathouse arrange a huge range of watersports activities ranging from waterskiing, snorkelling, kayaking, deep sea fishing, scuba diving and even dolphin watching excursions. Golfers will no doubt enjoy the challenging yet enjoyable layout at the nearby Golf du Chateau course layout penned by South African design ace Peter Matkovitch. Kids will be kept amused by all the beach activities arranged by the Kid’s Club as well as the well equipped games room with its Play Station and Wii games. But the real star of the show here has to be the superb Nira Spa! This very spacious and stylish facility offers a unique range of therapies, featuring the ancient regimes of Ayurveda, Yoga and Vedanta combined with the latest international wellness pampering such as Hydrotherapy, Cocoons, Body Polishes and Fusion Massage. Ultimately then, the Shanti Maurice pulls off a great balancing act in that it is perfect for anybody with an interest in yoga, meditation and holistic activities, but it now also caters for those who are just looking for a bit of blissful indulgence in a beautiful island location. In fact, it’s difficult to imagine a better place to escape the stresses and strains of modern life than the Shanti Maurice!
