What's Hot

  • Fantastic All Inclusive package - including unlimited French champagne by the glass from 6 pm (which definitely gets a big thumbs-up from us!)
  • Some of the very best snorkelling on the island right there in the Blue Bay Marine Reserve which boasts stunning coral formations
  • A mere 10 minute hop from the airport so you can get on with enjoying your holiday straight away
  • Choice of 3 beaches so you're always able to escape the crowds, especially on the "wild" beach
  • Fantastic choice of restaurants (and no supplements either) The Italian restaurant Porto Vecchio has been rated one of the best on the island more than once!

What's Not

  • You will hear and see aircraft with the airport being close-by - then again this is for a sum total of just 5 minutes a day so really shouldn't bother most people
  • At 327 rooms this is a big resort - so guests looking for a smaller, more intimate would probably be happier elsewhere

South Africans are often nervous about the “extra” costs associated with island holidays, particularly the steep drinks prices which can be enough to make even the strongest Rand carrying tourist want to weep! So when the Shandrani launched their "Serenity Plus" 5-star all inclusive package where virtually everything is “free", the sounds of rejoicing could be heard all over the country. Just consider what is included: a la carte dining at a range of excellent restaurants, a selection of unlimited beers, local and imported spirits, selected imported bottled wines and even unlimited French champagne (!) after 6 pm, most land and water sports and a mini-club for children. “So what’s the catch?” I hear you asking. Well nothing actually. The Shandrani boasts extremely comfortable rooms in attractive and lush tropical gardens, and you have the choice of no fewer than three beaches which vary hugely in nature. Perhaps the main weakness if we’re being picky is the resort’s position close to the airport, so occasionally you see and hear aircraft overhead (to keep some perspective however, there are typically perhaps 10-15 flights a day so it’s hardly Heathrow!)

The grounds at the Shandrani are huge with 327 rooms spread amongst 50 acres of lush gardens and the hotel enjoys a 2km long stretch of beach. All rooms are clean and bright and the family apartments are beautifully designed with a modern family in mind. Funnily enough we prefer the cheaper Superior Rooms (50 m²) to the Deluxe Rooms (60 m²) but that’s obviously very subjective. If you’re on honeymoon then the Senior Suites (110 m²) make for a stunning romantic upgrade as they are far more stylish and contemporary in their décor and enjoy direct beach access. Whilst all the rooms except the Senior Suites accommodate children, the 2 bedroomed Family Apartments and the more upmarket Family Suites are perfect if you need more space and privacy whilst still keeping your kids close to hand! When compared to it’s stable-mates Paradis and Dinarobin and some of the other newer five star hotels on the island perhaps the rooms aren’t quite as luxurious in decor, however, the price is so competitive with the fully inclusive deal here that the value at Shandrani is difficult to resist.

As mentioned previously the opportunity to dine around is one of the huge attractions of the Shandrani and there certainly is plenty of choice with 4 restaurants and 2 bars! The main restaurant is Le Grand Port which specializes in buffets and is probably the default choice for families looking for plenty of choice (kids just love buffets!) and a more relaxed environment. In common with many such main restaurants at big resorts it is very large and lacks any real atmosphere of intimacy, but the good news is that if you’re looking for something more personal or you’re not a buffet fan then there are some lovely a la carte alternatives: at the far end of the resort overlooking its own stunning pool you’ll find Le Sirius restaurant where you can enjoy light international dishes or if you are in the mood for Italian/Mediterranean there is the Porto Vecchio Restaurant; lovers of Thai food should head for the Teak Elephant for dinner. The Blue Bay Bar and the Sirius Bar are perfect places to chat to fellow guests whilst quaffing an ice cold Phoenix or exotic cocktail (remember it’s all included!) – and no doubt the eternally hungry kids will love the pancakes and snacks served up in the afternoon!

One of the things we really like about the Shandrani is that it has no fewer than 3 beaches to choose from, so even though it’s a very large resort you’ll always manage to find a quiet spot away from the crowds. Whilst 2 of the beaches are long sandy coves lining the protected lagoon, there’s also an unusual “wild beach” on the ocean side of the peninsula – here waves come through a gap in the reef so you can even try body surfing the swells. In some ways it reminds us of a KZN south coast beach (although with much whiter sand and even warmer water!) Another highlight is that Blue Bay (where the Shandrani is located) is a marine reserve and a short boat ride out to the massive coral formations gives you access to the best snorkelling in Mauritius. Above the water there’s also plenty to do with a wide range of watersports available including waterskiing, sailing, kayaking and windsurfing – back on land there are no fewer than 6 tennis courts as well as a 9-hole mashie golf course. And if all that sounds way too active for you then you also have the Spa just waiting for you to pop by for some serious pampering!

The Shandrani is absolutely ideal for kids - not only do all of the rooms (except the senior suites) accommodate children, but there are family apartments and suites specifically designed with separate rooms. The all inclusive nature of the hotel also means that parents aren’t continuously worrying about every drink or snack disappearing down their children’s throats adding up to a very large bill at the end of the stay! During school holidays there will be plenty of other families at the hotel providing the kids with other children to play with and the excellent kid’s club will keep children so entertained that parents can take a well earned break. But couples shouldn’t let the child-friendly nature of the Shandrani put them off the resort - especially if you travel outside school holidays when you’ll find a far quieter atmosphere that together with the expansive grounds will mean you will always be able to find your own little spot. So whether its families looking for a great beach holiday, couples wanting a romantic holiday or honeymoon or watersports enthusiasts wanting to do their thing on the sheltered waters of Blue Bay, the Shandrani really does cater for just about everyone!
