CLOSED FOR EXTENSIVE RENOVATIONS - RE-OPENING IN LATE 2017
Le Saint Géran lies basking on the golden peninsular of Belle Mare on the island's north-east coast - here 60 acres of tropical gardens splashed with brilliantly coloured orchids and bougainvillea and hundreds of swaying palm trees surround the stunning villas and suites of the resort and lead down to two kilometres of secluded and sheltered white sand beaches (arguably the island’s best beaches in fact) which fringe the brilliant sapphire expanse of the Indian Ocean.
All of the resort’s 162 suites and 1 villa feature twenty-four hour butler service, ensuring that your every wish is met through the provision of superb personal service. They all boast private terraces or balconies that overlook either the open ocean or the lagoon, with doors leading out into lush, tropical gardens. Inside the suites are superbly luxurious whilst retaining an old world elegance and restraint that makes them very understated compared to some of the latest rival resorts on the island with their much more contemporary and showy styling.
The standard rooms here are the 148 Junior Suites (ranging from 65 - 70m2) with colonial décor influences creating a very agreeable, intimate and romantic space indeed – along with modern equipment like satellite television and DVD players you’ll also find that they get the basics right, like the finest bed and bathroom linens the world has to offer, with beds covered with Egyptian cotton sheets and piled high with goose down pillows (in fact, there is a comprehensive pillow menu so you can choose exactly the type you prefer!) If you require more space then look no further than the 14 Ocean Suites (119 m2) which boast a spacious separate lounge area and private dining room as well as 2 secluded terrace areas. The ultimate accommodation option at Le Saint Géran however has to be the superb Villa (622 m2), a truly magnificent retreat for up to six guests with its private swimming pool and stunning lounge and dining area where you can enjoy meals prepared by your own personal chef, served by private waiters!
Talking of food, the restaurants at Le Saint Géran have to be one of the resort’s biggest draw cards with no less than 2 restaurants from Michelin starred chefs conjuring up arguably the best food on the island – staying here is truly a gourmet’s dream! Chief amongst these has to be Spoon des Iles by the world renowned Parisian chef Alain Ducasse – here you can indulge in such delicious choices as dorado wrapped in banana leaf, ravioli with fresh water prawns and wood roasted rack of lamb. Then there’s the new waterside restaurant Rasoi by Vineet, featuring contemporary Indian cuisine by chef Vineet Bhatia whose Michelin-starred Chelsea restaurant was named London’s "Indian Restaurant of the Year" just a year after it opened. Dining here is a multi-sensory experience, from the atmospheric tropical fans, bespoke chill-out music and live "floor show" of chefs in the kitchen, to the aromas of cooking from the wood-fired Tandoor oven – a special feature here is the spectacle of the TAK-A-TAK grill, a form of traditional Indian Teppanyaki. Whilst it may not boast a famous award winning chef, the main restaurant La Terrasse, located alongside the swimming pool and overlooking the Indian Ocean, is no slouch itself and offers an eclectic variety of local and international specialities – here table d’hôte menus feature things like mouth-watering lobster and prawns straight from the ocean. It blends the spicy temptations of home-grown Mauritian Creole cuisine with the delicate subtleties of France, India, China and Asia. Along with all this, you’ll get to enjoy evening entertainment which is of excellent quality (as you would expect no doubt of a premier resort like Le Saint Geran)
Le Saint Géran enjoys a stunning position on the end of the peninsula, so you can choose from stunning white sand beaches either overlooking the calm waters of the cove, or views across the aquamarine lagoon with its fringing coral reef towards the Indian Ocean beyond. This is quite simply a fantastically beautiful natural setting to simply chill on a sun lounger (perhaps whilst one of the staff expertly polishes your sunglasses!) or indulge in some of the best water sports on the island. As you’d expect, all activities at the One&Only Le Saint Géran are devoted to providing the very best, be it unlimited free waterskiing, laser sailing, windsurfing, pedal-boating, kayaking, or snorkelling and glass-bottom boat trips. On land, you can enjoy the 9-hole par-33 Gary Player designed golf course or one of the excellent 18-hole courses nearby, or play a few sets of tennis on one of five floodlit synthetic grass courts. Scuba diving, deep sea fishing trips, banana and tube rides are also available at extra cost as is another unusual activity - kite surfing. In fact the vast white sand beach, beautiful flat water lagoon and challenging reef waves make Le Saint Géran arguably the finest kite surfing destination on the island – and if you fancy learning how to do this exciting new sport, the resort's Kite Surfing Centre provides private kite surfing courses for all levels, from total beginners to advanced riders.
Whilst the resort is obviously very upmarket, it is also well suited to kids. In fact there are 2 clubs that will ensure they never get bored and have a memorable holiday (and give you a welcome break no doubt!): 4-11 year olds are taken care of by the excellent kidsOnly facility which has an exciting shipwreck theme based on the famous Le Saint Géran shipwreck nearby which was immortalised in the Bernardin de Saint Pierre novel ‘Paul et Virginie.’ This club offers kids their own swimming pool as well as a wide range of exciting outdoor activities and, if the weather turns, a computer room featuring four Apple iMacs as well as a movie room equipped with the latest gaming systems. Teenagers (12 -17) are also brilliantly catered for at clubOne which provides a cool, funky, safe and only-for-teens environment in which young people can play, relax and make new friends whilst enjoying good music or just chilling out; alternatively they can get out and about with excursions like island picnics or lagoon cruises – this is one place where the semi-permanent sulk usually marring your teenager’s face might even get replaced with something approaching a smile! Of course whilst the kids are off having fun, it makes perfect sense to take full advantage by indulging yourself at the resort’s fabulous ESPA Spa, nestled amongst a lush tropical landscape overlooking a reflecting pool with ocean views, which boasts a wide variety of sumptuous treatments and pampering massages.
Ultimately it all adds up to the very best that Mauritius has to offer – from the stunning beaches, unrivalled dining experiences, superb personal service and luxurious accommodation in the most effortlessly elegant and understated of surroundings – Le Saint Géran is hugely tough to fault and is 5 Star Deluxe at its very best!
