What's Hot

  • We loved the spa massage huts right on the beach for lagoon view massages!
  • The northern location lends itself to wonderful sunset views as well as a sandy lagoon beach for swimming
  • A real Mauritian cosmopolitan atmosphere is a short walk to the buzz of Grande Baie
  • Deluxe rooms and up are located in separate cottages away from the main hotel building and are close to the beach

What's Not

  • Luxurious rooms are not one of the highlights of this hotel, and they could probably do with some freshening up and modernising

Merville Beach

The Merville Beach will suit those wanting to get out and about and explore the island because it is within walking distance of Grand Baie with its shops, restaurants and booming nightlife options. But this also means that if you are after a secluded and private island experience, then the Merville Beach probably isn’t the right resort for you. This part of Mauritius is synonymous with sunny days and a mild climate – perfect for enjoying the resort’s beautiful white sand beach, crystal clear lagoon and stunning views of the island. The rooms and chalets, most with dressed stonewalls and thatched roofs, are spread out through lush, tropical gardens, with an architectural style that gives the hotel a harmonious air of comfort and authenticity.

Décor is bright and cheerful and all rooms boast large beds and comfortable armchairs or sofas - there are several different types of accommodation on offer amongst the 169 rooms at the Merville Beach which are split between the main hotel building, the bungalows area and a garden court offering views over the water pond and its small bridge. The bigger the room the more you pay obviously and the choice lies between Standard Rooms (29 m²), Superior Rooms (34 m²), the attractive Deluxe Rooms (36 m²) and finally the Family Deluxe Rooms (42 m²) Whichever you choose you’ll get to enjoy air conditioning, a TV with integrated radio and video, mini bar and a terrace or balcony.

As you would expect at a relatively compact 3 star resort, there aren’t a huge amount of restaurant and bar options – but on the positive side the bar does have quite a buzzy atmosphere and there is also an All Inclusive option which we usually find is the most popular choice for South Africans. The La Terrasse restaurant overlooks the swimming pool with nice views out over the bay and serves up a mixture of buffets, set course menus and barbeques. You’re likely to spend quite a chunk of your time though under the thatched roof of the Le Badamier bar, admiring the breathtaking view of the turquoise lagoon whilst quaffing an exotic cocktail or ice cold Phoenix. If you’re on the beach catching some rays and don’t feel like moving to the bar, the good news is that there’s also a beach service. The resident band entertains guests every evening where you can relax in the balmy tropical night air or you may find yourself tempted to strut your stuff on the dance floor! There are also regular Sega nights where you can enjoy this colourful (and sexy) dance with its unique island rhythm.

By day there’s also plenty to keep yourself busy with. Enjoy the large swimming pool which has a smaller paddling pool if you have children with you, or relax in the shade of the palms and beach umbrellas lining the excellent sandy beach. Exciting activities include free water sports like kayaking, water skiing, pedal boats, lasers, glass bottom boat rides and snorkelling. Diving, catamaran cruises, speedboat trips and big game fishing can be arranged by the hotel for a fee. Back on land you can play tennis, football, volley ball or work out in the gym. Mountain bikes can be hired for the day or if you are in need of your fix, there is a golf course nearby.

Merville Beach has a kid’s club and is a family friendly resort as there are children’s activities provided throughout the day - all of the rooms also accommodate children (including the 3 family rooms which can accommodate up to 5 people) and if you opt for the all inclusive package then parents aren’t continuously worrying about every drink or snack being consumed by their children adding up to a terrifying bill at the end of the stay! During school holidays there will be plenty of other families at the hotel so your kids will have other youngsters to make friends and play. And whilst they’re having fun perhaps you can take advantage by sneaking off to the resort’s Spa – unusually Merville Beach is one of the few 3-star hotels in Mauritius to have its own spa and even more unusually it also enjoys views out over the sea. There are 6 treatment rooms but try if you can to enjoy a relaxing massage in one of the two outdoor kiosks whilst looking out over the turquoise lagoon – ahhh, completely and utterly blissful!
