The Maradiva Villas previously used to be known as the Taj Exotica – now under new management, it is still positioned at the very top end of the Mauritius market. There are just 65 villas spread throughout the lush tropical gardens that dominate the massive 27 hectare grounds – and with each villa carefully positioned to allow ultimate privacy and tranquility, this is an immensely private resort. Even when the hotel is full you’ll hardly see another guest, with many of them preferring to spend most of their time in and around their gorgeous villas – so Maradiva is perfect for those people looking for absolute peace and quiet; however guests looking for more of a vibe are probably better advised to head to one of the bigger resorts. Certainly from a location perspective, the Maradiva is tough to beat with its great sandy beach overlooking the turquoise lagoon at Tamarin Bay (famously home to many wild dolphins) and with superb views overlooking the majestic Le Morne mountain.

But if the location’s impressive then you should see the villas which are also truly outstanding! Drawing their styling inspiration from the charming local architecture they are hugely spacious - each with a private pool adjoining a tranquil living area and with the benefit of full butler service to ensure that every guest need is met. The 65 villas are divided into three categories: Luxury Suite Villas, Exclusive Suite Villas and Presidential Suite Villas. There are 57 Luxury Suite Villas (11 of them in prime beachfront positions) which are 163m2. All are spacious and airy and have luxuriant king sized beds, air-conditioning, plasma television with DVD and CD system, internet access, walk in wardrobe and en suite bathroom with twin vanities and a rain shower. Best of all though are the small gardens which have private plunge pools, comfortable loungers, an area for outdoor dining and an open-air garden shower (always a firm favourite with guests!) With stunning sea views this is the perfect place to relax with a book or top up your tan.

The 6 Exclusive Suite Villas also all have private pools and are larger at 220m2. Each one-bedroom suite villa has all the facilities of a luxury villa but also features a separate living room and bedroom. The terrace features shaded sofa seating and a dining table for al fresco dining. Alongside the plunge pool is a raised plinth with a comfortable daybed mattress and bolsters - the perfect spot for lounging in the sun. Finally there are two presidential suites which are 345m2 and which take pride of place at the centre of the resort's crescent beach. The living room opens out onto an infinity pool with views of the ocean. There are two large bedrooms in the suite, both of which have stunning ocean views. Sun loungers and shaded seating areas let guests take full advantage of the location and views. On the terrace, a dining table for six offers the perfect space for alfresco entertaining.

Even though there are a limited number of villas, the Maradiva has enough choice in terms of restaurants and bars to keep guests happy. The Beach Bar is best to grab an ice cold Phoenix during the day, and Breakers Bar, adjacent to the infinity pool and beach, is best after dark with its relaxed atmosphere with comfortable lounge seating and terrace overlooking the ocean. The main restaurant, Coast2Coast offers all day dining in a casual environment on its open terrace overlooking the lagoon – a la carte menus which change daily are the order of the day here. One thing definitely worth trying during your stay is a romantic dinner on the beach under an exclusive tent. Cilantro is the gastronomic prestige restaurant serving excellent Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese and Indian cuisine – the highlight here has to be the interactive live cooking teppanyaki counter which is always a great social experience. Rather than dine out at the restaurants, another popular option which many guests choose is to rather dine in their villas for an even more intimate and relaxed experience.

If you can drag yourself away from the comfortable oasis that is your villa, you’ll find that there are a wide range of activities on offer at the Maradiva Villas. Water sports that can be arranged from the resort include sailing, windsurfing, waterskiing, snorkelling, and scuba diving – for something different why not go on a dolphin spotting excursion in Tamarin Bay or deep sea fishing (the drop off is very close to the coast here so you can be in prime fishing waters very quickly) There’s also a spacious sports centre featuring the latest cardio and gym equipment, a swimming pool and floodlit tennis court. Golf can be arranged at the excellent Tamarin estate 18-hole golf course about 15 minutes drive from the hotel. Of course you can also just lounge around the pool or take a walk or swim on the excellent beach. If that’s not relaxing enough then head to the Maradiva Spa which blends ancient Indian treatments with contemporary therapies, from Indian aromatherapy massages to body scrubs and wraps. Ultimately for those looking to relax in a luxurious and blissfully tranquil environment, it’s difficult to imagine a better place on the island than the Maradiva Villas!
