What's Hot

  • Tripadvisor award winner for Romantic Resort! So love-birds will feel right at home here!
  • For the romantics amongst us, we must highlight the in-room bath and private dining option
  • The whole resort is based on Feng Shui, meaning no corners, eye-pleasing arrangements and a focus on the energy flow
  • Free cinema with complimentary popcorn offers something really a bit different

What's Not

  • Deluxe rooms may be a great option with their privacy and own lagoon, but they are a little distance from the other amenities and restaurants
  • The blocks of rooms themselves are quite prominent and perhaps not quite as easy on the eye as other resorts
  • Good sandy beaches - but perhaps not quite as good as some others on the island

Picture an ideal Mauritian beach resort in your mind and LUX* Grand Gaube will resemble it pretty closely. Located on a picturesque bay in the north-east of the island near the fishing village of Grand Gaube (one of just a handful of resorts in this part of the island) it boasts 3 separate sandy beaches overlooking a serene turquoise lagoon and is only a 10-15 min drive from Grand Baie. The 198 rooms are built hugging the shoreline so virtually all the rooms have a sea view. They fall into five different room categories, each of them inspired by different elements and hence with corresponding colour schemes and materials – but it’s probably true to say that they are relatively dated compared to the more contemporary styling of some competitors.

There are 126 superior rooms (48m²) situated in blocks closest to the main area of the hotel and facing the main beach - wooden fittings give warmth to the rooms and the décor is in sophisticated shades of sand and ochre. The 46 deluxe rooms are larger at 58m² and are all located in their own area around the man-made false harbour at the very east of the resort - there is a separate beach here and it offers a little more privacy especially during the school holidays. In saying that though, they are also furtherest away from the restaurants and main hotel area, so if you don’t fancy the commute then they’re probably better avoided. Then there are 23 junior suites (78m²) including a small dressing room and spacious bathroom, with a walk-in shower and whirlpool bath. Or if you’ve just been paid a big year-end bonus then you may fancy one of the 2 Senior Suites or, the jewel in LUX* Grand Gaube’s crown, the stunning 2 bedroomed Emperor Villa (288m²) with its own private beach and butler service!

As you would expect from a large resort there are a four restaurants and three bars to choose from. The hotel's main restaurant, Ginkgo overlooks the swimming pool and aquamarine lagoon and dinners alternate between buffets and set course menus; La Bastide is a Mediterranean beach bar and grill with a relaxed atmosphere where you can eat under shady parasols beside the sea admiring the views of the islands that lie off Mauritius’s north coast; then there’s Karma House, the culinary flagship of the hotel, if you really want an a romantic and special evening. The concept here is “Trilogie” cuisine, where the same main ingredient is cooked in three different ways. Finally, Abalone specializes in seafood and is the perfect spot to spoil yourself with a lobster feast! There are three bars at LUX* Grand Gaube - the Grand Bleu pool bar where you can grab some liquid refreshment to cool off and light snacks. The Spirit Lounge is ideal for a quiet drink, before or after dinner. The Banyan Bar has a relaxed atmosphere and is situated under some of the oldest banyan trees on the island and is a great place to enjoy an ice cold beer or exotic cocktail. After dinner you can enjoy some of the resort’s evening entertainment and a few drinks - cabaret and other shows are organized on a regular basis as well as local musicians and bands.

As mentioned previously, LUX* Grand Gaube boasts 3 sandy beaches all in their own golden sand coves from where you can enjoy panoramic views onto the delightfully scenic small islands offshore, especially the spectacular shape of Coin de Mire. The sand on the beach is quite compacted so is perhaps not quite as soft as some beaches, however the sea here tends usually to be calm and it should keep sun lovers more than happy – if not then the resort’s 2 stunning pools certainly will! The resort is well suited to those who enjoy water sports with complementary choices including waterskiing, windsurfing, kayaks and, for an extra fee, speed boat rides, scuba diving and big game fishing. Guests looking for more tranquil pursuits (and gain some spiritual harmony on the way!) can try tai chi and yoga classes or head to the excellent Zen Spa (which isn't as expensive as many others in other resorts) and which has plenty of facilities too with five massage rooms, two hydrotherapy rooms and a double massage kiosk, two whirlpools, a salt water swimming pool, a hammam, sauna, high-tech gym, not to mention a hairdressing salon!

Whilst a romantic atmosphere prevails, LUX* Grand Gaube is also well suited to families – apart from all the activities mentioned above, there is also a good kid’s club and (unusually for Mauritius) even a teen’s club which will arrange days of fun-packed activities to keep them happy and, hopefully, tired out! Another unusual facility is the 60 seater cinema which could come in handy if the weather doesn’t play ball. Add this all up and it’s no wonder then that LUX* Grand Gaube is one of the island’s most popular and consistently excellent resorts with a huge number of returnee guests – it’s simply a great all rounder!
