Our Verdict

A firm favourite with South Africans, Victoria Beachcomber has to be one of the most family-friendly resorts in Mauritius – the accommodation is particularly spacious with some of the roomiest rooms on the island in the four star deluxe category and there’s a great kid’s club too!

What's Hot

  • A great all-rounder with something for everyone - no wonder it's the most popular resort on the island for South Africans
  • Boasting some of the most spacious rooms on the island (60m²) in the 4 Star/ 4 Star Deluxe categories
  • With an excellent kid's club and babysitting available for younger kids as well, this is a great family resort - so parents can relax and enjoy their holiday
  • Nicely nestled between Grand Baie and Port Louis, so a shopping trip or night on the town is always close by

What's Not

  • Due to the fact that this resort is extremely popular with families, those who are looking for a kid-free zone may want to check out other resorts
  • It's a big and vibey resort - so again, the Victoria may not suit those clients wanting a smaller or quieter resort - although if you move a little along the beach you can usually find a quieter spot
  • Good idea to wear booties when you swim to protect you from any coral bits or rocks you may encounter

Victoria Beachcomber nestles in the small coastal village of Pointe Aux Piments on a lovely white sandy beach and is surrounded by lush tropical gardens. The beauty of this location is that it is generally sheltered from the island’s prevailing south-easterly trade winds and enjoys some of the sunniest and best weather on the island – and facing west you also get to enjoy those spectacular sunsets every day! The beach here is really nice although it’s a good idea to wear rubber booties if you go wading off the beach due to coral pieces. The spacious tropical gardens are also beautiful and the hotel is spread out, allowing you to always find a little private spot should you desire a bit of peace and quiet. And if you feel like a change of scenery, the Victoria is very conveniently situated halfway between the fashionable centre of Grand-Baie and Port-Louis, the capital.

The rooms are arranged in large arcs slightly set back in the gardens giving them more privacy (not right on top of the pool or beach as in some hotels in Mauritius) As indicated above they are perhaps the most spacious rooms of any 4 Star hotel on the island – even the smallest, the entry level Superiors and the slightly more expensive Deluxe rooms, are an airy 60m² and almost all are able to accommodate 2 kids under 18 years with their parents. The Deluxe Rooms feel even more spacious on account of the open ceiling space courtesy of their position on the top floor (but some guests may prefer the slightly cheaper Ground Floor Deluxes where you are able to walk out into the gardens). For families wanting greater space and privacy however, the lovely Family Apartments (120 m²) are fantastic with their 2 separate bedrooms and 2 bathrooms; for honeymooners though our pick would have to be one of the 6 Junior Suites (75 m² including their spacious terraces) on account of the fact that they are positioned closest to the beach and have lovely wooden decks where you can happily chill whilst looking out over the lovely gardens and beach. Whichever room type you choose the good news is that they all boast really nice, sleek and bright contemporary styling and décor touches, so they’re as attractive as they are spacious!

There’s plenty of choice to keep guest’s appetites satisfied too with Victoria Beachcomber offering 3 restaurants and 1 main bar – and the good news is that whilst Half Board (breakfast and dinner) is the standard meal plan, you can choose to upgrade to All Inclusive (a selection of local and imported drinks plus all meals) and this is usually the most popular choice for South Africans. The main restaurant is called Le Superbe which overlooks the pool and lagoon and has been divided into a number of different sections so as to create a more intimate ambience – interestingly it also integrates a 30-seat area just for the kids with child sized tables and chairs! Then there’s the romantic beach restaurant called L’Horizon which specializes in delicious fresh seafood where you can dine with your toes in the sand! The good news is that it’s accessible even for those not wanting to pay extra as there is a set course menu included as part of either the half board or all inclusive package – should you want extra choice or want to treat yourself to something really special like lobster for example, then there’s also an a la carte selection for which you would pay a supplement. The third restaurant is La Casa, a romantic Italian restaurant boasting a panoramic view over Port-Louis. Le Bar is the main bar and ideal for sitting on the covered terrace or under the palm trees whilst enjoying the view over an ice cold Phoenix beer!

In common with all the Beachcomber resorts, there’s a huge range of land and water sports and activities available at Victoria Beachcomber, most of them complimentary – these include water skiing, kayaks, sailing, snorkelling and tennis. A major highlight here is the huge infinity pool where when you’re swimming it truly does seem to blend into the stunning aquamarine lagoon beyond. There’s also a huge gym equipped with all the latest fitness gear if you’re determined that all that delicious food isn’t going to get the better of your waistline! Kids will love the excellent kid's club which apart from a wide range of toys and games also puts together an exciting daily activities programme – a great favourite is the pirate theme day where kids get dressed up as pirates before enjoying things like a picnic on the beach and a treasure hunt in the tropical gardens! We’ve emphasized the family-friendly nature of the Victoria so much that honeymooners and couples might be a bit nervous, but the truth is that whilst they are probably best advised to avoid school holiday periods when families are likely to dominate, this is a great all round resort where they will enjoy a fantastic romantic break – the Victoria Beachcomber really does offer something for everyone!
