What's Hot

  • The location of this gorgeous resort on its own little peninsula surrounded by beach and fish reserve makes the rest of the world melt away - there's not another resort in sight
  • Superbly attentive personal service without being intrusive
  • Complimentary golf is available at both the Legends and Links courses
  • Rooms are some of the largest and are elegantly decorated with a sophisticated, toned down style
  • Romance can be found at every turn at this resort - with couple massages, private over-water suites and superb fine dining

What's Not

  • Be aware that drinks and meal prices here are as befits a truly top-end Mauritian resort - this is the type of resort suited to clientele who don't even bother to look at the prices on menus. The more "wealth challenged" of us could be in heart attack territory here!
  • Although 'Les Petit Princes' kid's club is available for children, the overall ambiance of this tranquil and extremely elegant resort might be too restrained for more boisterous youngsters
Constance Le Prince Maurice

Set on an isolated 60 hectare retreat on a peninsula on the island’s east coast well away from other resorts, a big plus point is that it’s also largely protected from the prevailing south-east trade winds that can plague resorts on this stretch of the island. Overlooking a calm lagoon Le Prince Maurice enjoys a very attractive location with well tended gardens and idyllic long white beaches. A natural fish reserve situated in the western part of the hotel adds to the uniqueness and natural beauty of the location.

The 88 suites are situated either in thatched villas around the garden or stilted villas above the water of the lagoon. The 76 Junior Suites (all 70 m²) are situated in buildings with stylish thatched roofs - there are 68 suites typically housed in double storied units of 8 suites at a time (with sea view or overlooking the tropical garden) and, uniquely for Mauritius, there are also 8 suites on stilts overlooking the natural fish reserve. Whilst the stilted suites are possibly more private and peaceful, they also overlook the lagoon (no swimming allowed on account of the fish reserve) as opposed to the stunning beach and are also further away from the main hotel’s restaurants and bars (note that the stilted rooms can only be requested, not guaranteed) Whichever type you end up in however, you’ll no doubt be delighted by the superb luxury and modern open plan style of the rooms with their polished wooden floors and large en-suite marble bathrooms.

The next step up are the 12 villas – much larger at 130 m² - and located in stand alone thatched roof villas. Nine of the villas have private heated swimming pools and are located right on the beach whilst the remaining three are on stilts overlooking the lagoon (these lack the private pools of the land based villas) In addition to the standard facilities the villas boast a bathroom with a whirlpool bathtub, outdoor soaking bath, separate living room with dining/seating area and guest shower and loo – certainly if budget isn’t an issue they’re a tough choice to beat!

As you can imagine, Le Prince Maurice is not short of fantastic dining experiences – this is a relatively formal style of dining in keeping with the upmarket clientele that the hotel attracts. The main restaurant L'Archipel is located in the main building, overlooking the pool and the beach and partly open-air, is largely 'a la carte' which is an exception in larger resort hotels in Mauritius. For lunch there is Le Beach Deck which is located on a wooden deck directly on the beach. However, if you’re looking for a truly memorable dining experience, then head for Le Barachois, a unique floating restaurant located over the fish reserve comprising of five decks accessed by wooden pathways - a wonderfully romantic experience in anyone’s book! Afterwards you can head to the Laguna Bar overlooking the pool and beach to enjoy the sophisticated live entertainment hosted every night. One thing to remember is that as a top end 5 star hotel you’ll be paying European 5 star prices for food and drinks here - as South Africans with our puny Rand this can definitely make your eyes water! As consolation though, at least the quality is also top class!

As you would expect from a 5-star resort, the facilities and activities available at Le Prince Maurice are extensive with a stunning infinity pool and plenty of water sports to enjoy including dinghy sailing, water skiing, pedalos, glass bottom boat trips, snorkelling, windsurfing and kayaking. There are two floodlit tennis courts as well as an air-conditioned squash court – but perhaps the highlight is that golfers can play free of charge at the nearby Belle Mare Plage Legend and Links courses, widely regarded as the best courses on the island, which are a five minute drive from the hotel by free shuttles. Other activities that can be arranged for an extra cost at the hotel include private yacht charter, deep sea fishing, diving and tennis lessons with the pro. There is also a wonderful Guerlain Spa which is the perfect place for some serious relaxation and pampering. Whilst Le Prince Maurice welcomes children and has an excellent kid’s club, it’s probably fair to say that this sophisticated and tranquil resort is perhaps better suited to couples or families with teenage kids – after all, there’s nothing worse than constantly stressing that your fun loving young kids are making too much noise and disturbing other guests! If you have young kids then you’ll probably feel more comfortable instead at their more child-friendly sister resort, the Belle Mare Plage.

In conclusion Le Prince Maurice is certainly one of the best five star hotels on the island. It has a superb beach, the rooms are very elegant and the feel of the hotel is understated, private but impeccable – highly recommended!
