What's Hot

  • "Nirvana" section is a great idea - an adults-only zone perfect for couples with its own pool and completely off limits to children under 12
  • 5 restaurants and 2 bars (one with the sports channel, gentlemen!) makes this getaway one of variety with something for every taste
  • Great views from the swimming pool overlooking the beach

What's Not

  • Nirvana is a quiet area with restricted access for kids - but you will find the rooms a bit smaller, although with the private balconies you may not even notice!
  • Whilst it has the facilities, Le Meridien perhaps lacks the more authentic character and charm of other Mauritian resorts
Le Meridien

Le Meridienthe "Nirvana" wing is an innovative separate “adults only” section which will no doubt be appreciated by couples wanting a quieter and more tranquil holiday experience

The Le Meridien is located almost equidistant between the island’s main centres of Port Louis and Grand Baie so is very convenient for those people who would like to indulge in some retail therapy whilst on holiday. It’s certainly a large and quite imposing resort, seemingly dominating its quite flat surroundings and also perhaps not boasting the same degree of lush tropical gardens as found at some other resorts. The 265 rooms and suites are spacious and stylishly furnished and utilize warm, rich colours, enhancing the tropical atmosphere and providing an interesting contrast to the sparkling turquoise and blue of the lagoon. Each of them air conditioned and ventilated, they are furnished with double or twin beds and offer balconies or terraces with views of the beach and the very large pool area.

The spacious Deluxe rooms (50 m²) are located in the main building of the hotel and offer views over the hotel's tropical garden and beach beyond. Then there are the “Nirvana” rooms which are almost a hotel within a hotel - located in their own separate wing of the hotel, they also enjoy an exclusive beach and outdoor pool and a policy that prohibits guests below the age of 12, so are perfectly suited to couples looking for a quiet and relaxing atmosphere away from the noise of any boisterous young kids. These Nirvana rooms are actually slightly smaller (at 45 m²) but luxuriously appointed with 32-inch LCD flat screen televisions, private balconies, marbled bathrooms and complimentary unlimited high-speed internet. Apart from the private beach and pool, they also include some nice spoiling value adds including a complimentary welcome bottle of wine, complimentary daily fruit plate, complimentary in-room breakfast, complimentary all day tea/coffee/soft drinks and canapé service in the exclusive luxury lounge, and daily complimentary sunset cocktail. Back in the normal resort, the larger Deluxe Suites (100 m²) are located on the ground floor of the main building with large private terraces and a spacious separate lounge area - many of them also include sofa beds making them suitable for those travelling with children. Finally there are the lovely Royal Suites (150 m²) – these duplex units with soaring 30-foot ceilings boast dramatic views over the lagoon below as well as a bar, dining room and lounge, and even a Jacuzzi tub in the bedroom!

Five restaurants offer an array of atmospheres and cuisines ranging from international multi-ethnic live cooking to Mediterranean and Mauritian fusion cuisine. The 180 combines panoramic views of the Ocean with buffet meals featuring flavours from Asia to Europe. Shells Beach Restaurant serves salads, tapas and grills during the day and transforms into an elegant and romantic seafood restaurant in the evening, whereas on the opposite side of the beach, La Faya separates the main resort from the exclusive Nirvana section and exudes an elegant beach atmosphere, blending Mauritian and European cuisine with an emphasis on fine wines. Le Cumin provides authentic Indian cuisine and for a more casual bite there’s La Croque Snack bar where you can enjoy soft drinks, pizzas, sandwiches and ice cream.

You’re also spoiled for choice as far as bars go at Le Meridien - the Bay View Bar is the central gathering place with games, sports channel news, and a variety of drinks, whilst the Papaya Bar is a great chill out spot with more of an emphasis on the healthy side and offers fresh juices, hot drinks and great sunset views in a lively atmosphere. For those wanting to combine hot drinks, cool beers, wines, spirits and juices with titbits or light snacks, the Bois Cheri Bar is the spot to go. La Faya Bar finally, sits beside the restaurant with the same name in a prime position and offers aperitifs cocktails and drinks plus a selection of snacks in a romantic atmosphere.

Boasting soft sandy beaches along the shores of the Indian Ocean, Le Meridien Ile Maurice is a tropical paradise where you could happily spend your days lounging by the crystalline turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, basking in the sun, sipping refreshing drinks, and getting up only to dip your toes in the lapping waves. But if you do fancy being a bit more active, you’ll be pleased that the hotel offers a wide range of land and water based activities, including volleyball, beach football, water-skiing, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, water polo, snorkelling and scuba diving. Its position next to Tamarin Bay means that you’re also perfectly placed to go on an unforgettable dolphin spotting trip where you may even be lucky enough to swim with these wonderful animals! Kids will no doubt love the Penguin Kid's Club where they will enjoy loads of fun supervised activities – such as face painting, sand castle building and crab hunting. Of course, having the little ones taken off your hands gives you the perfect excuse to head for a bit of personal pampering at the resort’s Taamra Wellness Spa. Mmmm – anyone for a delicious Ayurvedic four hands oil massage?
