What's Hot

  • Great position on one of the nicest beaches on the island
  • The fact that La Pirogue shares facilities with sister-resort next door, Sugar Beach, means that you have access to a wide range of restaurants and other facilities
  • Traditional architecture and feel will appeal to many guests
  • The whole resort is on one level (no upstairs rooms) so is perfect for those who battle to get around
  • Spectacular established gardens make La Pirogue a real tropical paradise

What's Not

  • Rooms are pretty small for a 4 Star resort - families should really think of getting inter-leading rooms rather than trying to squeeze the kids in with you (or perhaps choose the larger rooms at Sugar Beach instead)
  • With their thatched roofs and stone walls, the styling of the rooms will not appeal to everyone
  • The more upmarket and modern feeling Sugar Beach is not that much more expensive - so you may feel it worthwhile paying the bit extra

La Pirogue is situated along one of the longest and finest beaches on the island - the stunning ribbon of white powder sand that is Flic en Flac - right next door to its sister resort, the more upmarket Sugar Beach. The La Pirogue takes pride in billing itself as “the most authentic Mauritian resort” and it certainly does have a very traditional feel with the buildings inspired by the billowing pirogue sails of the traditional fishing boats from which the hotel takes its name. Dotted through the lush gardens and arranged in a relaxed village-style layout, are thatched cottages made from volcanic rock and wood that house the charming rooms with their whitewashed rough stone walls complemented by splashes of vividly coloured drapes and soft furnishings. The rustic feel is a million miles away from the more modern but arguably much less characterful designs of many of its competitors – it also gives La Pirogue a uniquely informal ambience that’s hugely popular with families and water sports enthusiasts alike.

The accommodation at La Pirogue is grouped in small villages laid out in an arcs amongst the literally hundreds of palm trees that lie scattered in the resort’s spacious grounds. The big question is whether the rooms with their rustic finishes – think wood and thatched roofs and interior walls of rough stone that have been painted over - appeal to your specific taste or not, and the answer will probably determine whether La Pirogue makes it onto your shopping list or not. There are 170 Standard Garden and Bungalow rooms, some of them with interleading doors which are ideal for families – they are on the small side at around 25 m² but can nonetheless accommodate 2 adults and a child at a squeeze (although 2 connected rooms would be infinitely more comfortable for all involved) If you can stretch a bit more then we would definitely suggest upgrading to 1 of the 40 Beach Pavilion rooms which are both larger (at 35 m² - and 2 kids can be accommodated) and have a better position closer to the beach.

Guests can wander through the palm grove studded with colourful hibiscus and fragrant frangipani down to the resort's beach - one of the longest and finest stretches of sand on the island - where an impressive choice of water sports is offered free of charge: from kayaking to water-skiing, windsurfing, glass-bottom boat rides, snorkeling and sailing. For an extra fee, guests can opt for undersea walks, parasailing, big game fishing and banana boat rides plus catamaran trips, submarine outings and dolphin-spotting. For those people who prefer to just look at the sea as opposed to actually swimming in it (and you’ll be amazed at how many people are like that!) they’ll no doubt gravitate to the gorgeous infinity swimming pool. Land-based activities include tennis and horse-riding, and for golfers the hotel offers mini-golf while the 18-hole Tamarina Golf Club, a 15-minute drive away, offers special rates to guests. The fantastic beach will no doubt delight the kids and there’s also the Sun Kid’s Club to keep them amused with loads of fun activities (like wind surfing or pony riding) as well as special menus, buffets and barbecues specifically prepared for the kids. They even have their own pool! Your moody teenager will also be catered for with the teen’s club where they can play the latest computer games, enjoy music and join in fun outings like island picnics and teen beach BBQ’s. Whilst the kids are kept happy and occupied, you might decide to take advantage by sneaking off for some spoiling “me time” at the Aura Spa at next door Sugar Beach!

Afterwards there’s more than enough variety in terms of restaurants and bars at La Pirogue to choose from – and an added bonus is that you are also able to pop across to Sugar Beach should you be wanting some more options. During the day you can sip on long cocktails at the Beach Bar whilst admiring the spectacular views across to Le Morne peninsular; before dinner enjoy a sundowner at the Blue Bar with its funky electric blue lighting before heading to the main restaurant, Thatches, which offers an innovative concept of six themed live-cooking stations: a stir-fry and fresh-noodle station; an Indian station with its tandoor oven for traditional local cuisine; a huge salad station; a fresh-pasta and pizza station; a grill-and-teppanyaki station; as well as a multitude of desserts and ice-cream bar. Or for a more intimate experience enjoy a romantic dinner at the renovated Paul et Virginie where you dine in cosy little thatch-roofed dining pavilions overhanging the new infinity pool.

La Pirogue has been a firm favourite for travelers to Mauritius for many years now and it remains an excellent choice for those looking for an informal, slightly rustic flavoured island holiday experience. And if you’re wanting something more sophisticated and upmarket, then the next door sister resort Sugar Beach could be just on the money whilst offering you the same stunning beach experience - ahhhh, the luxury of choice!
