What's Hot

  • The Sensimar is perfect for travellers wanting a quieter and more romantic stay as it caters strictly for couples with no kids under 18 allowed
  • Decent pricing means the Sensimar Lagoon makes attractive sense for the budget conscious traveller
  • All Inclusive meal option only – always popular with South Africans as it means you avoid any of those unpleasant surprises come check-out time
  • The Sensimar Lagoon is located close to Grand Baie - so you can easily explore the area by bus or taxi

What's Not

  • Note that entry level rooms are equipped with shower only
  • Much of the signage is first in French and then English – remember that the hotel catered for the French market until recently
  • Obviously not an option if you have kids

The Sensimar Lagoon Mauritius is perfect for honeymooners and romantics (or just couples wanting to escape from the usual hustle and bustle of kids running amok around a resort pool) as it caters exclusively for adult couples (no kids under 18 and no triple rooms allowed) Previously reserved for the French market only (which explains a lot if you haven’t heard of it before) a major renovation at the end of 2016 saw the resort rebrand itself from the   “Blumarine” to the Sensimar Lagoon and become "adults only" including removing the kid's club.

The resort is located at Anse La Raie, sandwiched between the fishing village of Cap Malheureux at the tip of the island, and the equally small Calodyne, a couple of kilometres further south. It’s not really a town, more a clutch of top-end hotels that have gravitated towards the north coast’s spectacular shimmering lagoon.  But what it lacks in street life, it makes up for in its rocky headlands and wild scenery, tamed only by pockets of ice-white beaches. The Sensimar Lagoon is perched on one of these small sandy coves, with great views over the 5 islands that lie off Mauritius’ northern coast, and a huge palm-edged pool just behind. The location also means it’s handily placed to jump in a bus or taxi to access the boutiques and bars of nearby Grand Baie.

The hotel certainly makes the most of its seaside location, with offerings like snorkelling, kite-surfing and glass-bottom boat rides. There are 3 restaurants to choose from – a casual beachside spot known as the Sea Breeze; the Wok Restaurant, which as the name suggests is an Asian eatery, overlooking the pool, and then the main restaurant, Restaurant Le Bénitier, with buffet spreads of Creole and international dishes – and guests have the opportunity through the resort’s “Dine Around” programme to sample the wares at all 3 restaurants. The All-Inclusive option makes it ideal to avoid surprises on check out, especially welcome given the rather sick state of our Rand!

The rooms at the Sensimar Lagoon are decorated in cool colours and have a tropical feel. They come with a flatscreen TV, tea and coffee facilities and balcony or terrace. You've got the choice between a garden or sea view in the main part of the hotel. Or you can upgrade to one of the Privilege Club rooms which are located in the Sensimar Lagoon Boutique section – these also come with little extra touches like fruit baskets and fluffy bathrobes. The Sensimar Lagoon Boutique also has its own infinity pool with ocean views, a second pool edged by lanterns, and a thatched-roof restaurant. There’s a rustic Spa, too, with massage cabanas for two overlooking the water.

The Sensimar Lagoon has lots to offer without being over-the-top. The spa offers treatments like couples massages and body wraps. Meanwhile adventurous types can have a go at kayaking, snorkelling, windsurfing or kite-surfing - its well-known kitesurf school is managed by Club Mistral, one of the world leaders in this exciting sport…it all gives you the peace of mind to get on with relaxing and enjoying your holiday!
